A hazard is any source, situation, or act that has the potential to cause harm, injury, illness, or damage to people, property, or the environment.
Brief Explanation of the Term “Hazard”
Hazards can arise from various factors, including workplace conditions, human behavior, environmental influences, or equipment failures. They are typically classified into categories such as physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards. Identifying and controlling hazards is fundamental to occupational health and safety management.
Example: A construction site uses powered hand tools.
The powered hand tools themselves are a physical hazard. If not used properly, they can cause cuts, lacerations, and other injuries.
- The rotating blades or other moving parts of the tools pose a risk of physical harm.
- Additionally, electrical cords can be a hazard if damaged or frayed, posing a risk of electric shock.
- Also, loud noises from the tools can be a hazard to hearing.
